Market Report 2022 Q2 Report - April, May, June

There are loads of resources out there on how to buy or sell a business.

But I could never find anything directly about the Australian market.

So I created this report to hopefully share up to date information with Aussie buyers and sellers of online businesses.

You can also find the Q1 report from last quarter here.

1. Number of Listings in Q2 of 2022?

This number will be interesting to track as the total of eCommerce businesses in Australia continues to grow. It will be interesting to track the exits as well and see if this is affected by any wider economic indicators. Total Number of Online Businesses Listed in Q1 of 2022 on Aussie Acquire = 175 Listings This is 54 less listings than last quarter. 82% of listings are eCommerce businesses this quarter. This is compared to 87% last quarter.

Q2 of 2022 Number of Listings

Notes on the number of listings;

These statistics are approximations based on the best available data.

Listings that are listed at under $20k are excluded from the total number of listings.

This is because these are often new stores that don't have much history or substance to be considered a business.

2. Top 5 Largest Australian Online Businesses Listed For Sale this Quarter

Here are the top 5 largest businesses listed this Quarter.

  3. Online Furniture Store with Retail Outlets for $2.7m
  4. Knife & Survival Brand for $2.7m
  5. SaaS for Monitoring Compliance Risk for $2.1m

(Please note these are businesses listed for sale by the owners or brokers in the 6-8 figure range, so obviously does not include any public companies or stock market listings etc).

3. What are the average Multiples for eCommerce businesses?

Roughly 50% of listings, publicly list their revenue and profit figures.

Valuations are based on a multiple of profits.

To understand how multiples work, read more here.

For Businesses under $100k the multiple varies quite a lot, especially as SAV is sometimes included.

Under $100k = 1.9x

$100 - $500k = 3.0x

Over $500k = 3.9x

As always take these figures with a pinch of salt as they are only based on a relatively small number of listings and are based on the asking price vs the final selling price.

How does this compare to last quarter?

You can see last quarter multiples were quite a bit lower, trading more in the 2-3x range.

4. Which Brokers had the most online business listings?

Most traditional business brokers focus on the offline bricks and mortar style businesses.

They may not know much about online businesses and how they work.

You can choose to sell your business yourself or use a broker.

Both ways can work but in general as the size of the business gets larger then it is more likely to involve a broker.

If you are looking at which brokers have the most online listings.

Here are the brokers with the most listings in Q2 of 2022.

Please note that total listings is not the same as total sales as a broker could take on lots of deals and not sell any.

There is also a factor of how big the businesses are so I have included an average of the listing prices to give an idea of what range they tend to deal in.

1) Bonza Business & Franchise Sales = average listing price $241k

2) Xcllusive = average listing price $81k

3) Mercury 5 Sky = average listing price $261k

4) Link Business = average listing price $327k

5) The Finn Group = average listing price $389k

Then there are also multiple brokers with 1-5 listings this quarter.
